As we all know, AZKALS (see above), the Philippine National Football team wins against Mongolia’s Blue Wolves with a score of 2-0 in the Azkals’ first leg in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup. The game was held in Panaad Stadium in Bacolod last week Wednesday (February 9, 2011).

Our very own Emilio “Chieffy” Caligdong of the Philippine Air Force scored the first goal during the 42nd minute while Filipino-British Phil Younghusband scored the second one during the 92nd minute.

The Azkals’ victory was witnessed by more than 18,000 Filipinos who went all the way to Bacolod to support our National Team.  According to the Azkals’ coach, Hans Michael Weiss, the number of supporters who watched the game definitely gave their confidence a big boost.

According to the AFC website, there will be another Philippines-Mongolia match this coming March 15,2011, but this time it will be held in Mongolia.

For this week, Ateneo de Manila’s Lady Netters (Lawn Tennis team) lost against the De La Salle University’s team, however, they managed to bag second place for this UAAP season.

The Lady Netters started the season with two losses to UST and DLSU, but went on a winning streak before losing to DLSU in the finals.

The first round’s highlight was their win against UP with a score of 3-2.

The second round opened up with a UP match the lead to another 3-2 victory. This was followed by a win against the defending champions, DLSU, with a score of 3-2. The round was finally topped off with a 4-1 win against UST.

The nationally ranked (#1) player and the Netters’ team captain Michelle Pang gave excellent plays, this suit was followed by Ivy de Castro, Joanna Opulencia, Mary Grace Rivero, Maki San Andres, Monique Angelo and Jessica Lagman. But despite the high performance in the singles and doubles games, Regina Santiago of the DLSU won the MVP award.

Even though Ateneo only won 2nd place, Pang has great hopes for the team. She said “Reaching the finals on my last year is an amazing feeling,” she continues, “The team is strong and will get stronger next year. Looking forward to them having a better year next year.
